There is another method of saying good morning in french: “bon matin,” pronounced bon mah-teen. However, though this is a literal translation of “good morning,” it is not typically used in France.

Matinée is used to refer to the whole morning like, il va pleuvoir cette matinée. (It’s going to rain this morning.) If you want to say good morning, say “Bonjour.”

To greet someone, you say bonjour from morning more or less till late afternoon or dusk, when it becomes bonsoir. Bonne nuit falls into the category of wishes, i.e. “have a good night, sleep well”, and is used when the other is (at least presumably) heading off to bed.
