Can a doctor tell me how tall will I be?

Answer From Jay L. Hoecker, M.D. There’s no proven way to predict a child’s adult height.

Are doctors height predictions accurate?

To predict a child’s height, doctors most commonly use a formula that dates to research completed in 1970. Then, for the final adult height prediction, it adds 2½ inches for boys and subtracts 2½ inches for girls. The result is said to be correct within two inches 95 percent of the time.

In order to tell whether you are still growing or whether you have completed puberty, a physician will need to examine you to determine your state of physical development. This may be part of the reason that a physician told you last year that your estimated adult height is 5’4″.

Well the nurse that measures me when I go to the doctor has measured me at 5’3″ one year and then 5’3.5″ another year and then 5’3″ this year, but I’m 5’4″ or maybe more. One time my doctor’s office measured me at 5’2 1/3″ and the hospital measured me at 5’3″. Yeah, doctors can be wrong. My doctor said I was done growing, but I kept growing.

How can a doctor tell how tall a child will grow?

A doctor can take an X-ray of your child’s hand and wrist. This X-ray can show the growth plates of a child’s bones. As a child ages, the growth plates become thinner. When a child is finished growing, the growth plates will disappear. A doctor can use a bone age study to determine how much longer, and taller, a child may grow.

How accurate is the genetic potential height predictor?

It’s not, of course. The genetic potential height predictor has a 68 percent chance of being within 2 inches and a 95 percent chance of being within 4 inches of this predicted height. Another limitation is that you have to know how tall a child’s birth parents are for this calculation to work.
