How effective is sea RAM?

Depending on the incoming missile’s speed, SeaRAM can be launched at over 20 miles away and intercept it with a very high probability of kill at around 6 miles. Whatever the math is, the SeaRAM system will launch to kill the target around 6 miles out. Phalanx has an effective range of about a mile.

Is goalkeeper better than phalanx?

The Goalkeeper system has the advantage of heavier rounds and almost twice the effective range of the original Phalanx, able to break up an incoming missile further way from the ship. The through-life costs of the larger Dutch system were higher as it was deck-penetrating, limiting which vessels could carry the mount.

What is the purpose of the RAM missile?

It was intended originally and used primarily as a point-defense weapon against anti-ship cruise missiles. As its name indicates, RAM rolls as it flies. The missile must roll during flight because the RF tracking system uses a two-antenna interferometer that can measure phase interference of the electromagnetic wave in one plane only.

How accurate is the SeaRAM missile?

SeaRAM is an extremely accurate weapon. Other missiles like ESSM are more maneuverable. However, accuracy is about more than missile agility. RAM utilizes a tri-mode seeker, mixing two different sensors. It has its own IR seeker and RF (radio frequency) seeker/link.
