Why is Linux not popular on desktop computer?

The main reason why Linux is not popular on the desktop is that it doesn’t have “the one” OS for the desktop as does Microsoft with its Windows and Apple with its macOS. If Linux had only one operating system, then the scenario would be totally different today. You will find an OS for every use case conceivable.

Is Linux desktop Dying?

The question is whether desktop Linux is dying. As others have noted, the Linux kernel is alive and well in Android devices and Linux servers. These platforms will likely remain strong for many years to come. However, on the desktop, Linux has never been popular.

Compared to Linux distributions like Ubuntu, who never test a danged thing before releases, this is a huge key to peace of mind for many sysadmins and server ops. Like @User, I prefer the BSD license and is the main reason I use it as my primary OS.

If you want a traditional unix desktop then a BSD unix will give you this as well as any linux distro. If you’re after an end-user system you might be better off with Ubuntu or Fedora. Gentoo Linux was based on a derivative of the BSD ‘ports’ packaging system.

Is FreeBSD easier to learn than Linux?

FreeBSD is much easier to learn and use because there aren’t a thousand and one distros to choose from with different package managers, DEs, etc. FreeBSD is more convenient to contribute to because it is the entire OS that is preserved and not just the kernel and a repo as is the case with Linux.

Is ZFS supported on BSD?

ZFS Support One BSD user noted that one of the main reasons that he switched to BSD was ZFS. In fact almost all of the people I talked to mentioned ZFS support on BSD as the reason they did not return to Linux. This is an area where Linux will lose out on for the time being.
