Why does the US have such low octane fuel?
Yes, the octane numbers seem much higher in Europe, but that is just a parlor trick. In its simplest terms, fuels with a higher octane ratings are used in high-compression engines to fight against detonation. In contrast, fuels with lower octane numbers can be used safely in most stock four-stroke motocross engines.

Why is higher octane better?
Higher octane allows engines to have higher compression ratios (for a more energetic explosion), more advanced ignition timing or forced-air induction like turbochargers or superchargers. It’s the fuel’s ability to be compressed more without pre-igniting that results in more power when used in the appropriate engine.
