Can a new battery kill an alternator?

Battery with internal short can damage the alternator by making the alternator work harder than usual. A battery with short will cause the alternator will run at its highest output continuously or at a long period of time. Alternators are not meant to give maximum output for a long period of time.

Can you charge a battery with a dead alternator?

If the alternator fails the battery will die, since it is not getting recharged. The only permanent solution to this problem is to get a new alternator but you can recharge the battery in the mean time.

In order to share an alternator with more than one battery we need 1) a parallel battery switch, e.g. Off-1-2-both, 2) a battery combiner or 3) a battery isolator.

As batteries age, they become less able to retain a charge because the metal inside corrodes. Eventually, the level of battery charge diminishes to the point where, no matter how much power the alternator gives to it, the battery can’t hold enough power to start the car.
