Why are blow off valves used?
The underlying objective of a blowoff valve (BOV) is to protect the turbo against damage while ensuring smooth and reliable drivability. It just so happens it makes a loud sound that gets everyone’s attention!
Does a blow off valve help performance?
A blow-off valve is a version of a compressor bypass valve that vents to atmosphere. There is no performance reason for doing this, but it does make a really loud noise. The only performance-related reasons to upgrade the compressor bypass valve is to fix a leaky factory valve.
Does a blow off valve reduce turbo lag?
A recirculating blow off valve releases the pressure from the turbo, diverting the excess back into the engine, preventing the turbo lag caused by the excess pressure, maintaining the proper and efficient spool up of the turbo.
Does blow off valve increase horsepower?
The MS3’s bov leaks at stock boost levels. Going aftermarket does not add any more power, but stops the loss of power due to the leak. This is not the case on our cars.
Are blow off valves bad for your car?
The simple answer is NO! A Turbosmart BOV or BPV are designed and engineered to improve the performance of your turbocharger system and NOT damage your engine.
Are blow off valves illegal?
A blowoff valve (sometimes “hooter valve” or BOV) performs the same task but releases the air into the atmosphere instead of recirculating it. Motorsports governed by the FIA have made it illegal to vent unmuffled blowoff valves to the atmosphere.
Can a BOV damage my engine?
Does a blow-off valve need a tune?
Any blow-off valve vented to the atmosphere will give you a louder, more noticeable sound, but it is not without its tradeoffs. Proper blow-off valve tuning is essential to the proper operation of your turbocharger system.
