What does it mean when you have high LDL but low triglycerides?

When you have low triglyceride levels but high LDL levels, it could indicate that you have a diet filled with healthy fats. Healthy fats will not only cause an increase in good cholesterol (HDL) but can also change the type of the LDL particles in the blood.

What level of LDL requires medication?

Your health care provider may prescribe medicine if: You have already had a heart attack or stroke, or you have peripheral arterial disease. Your LDL cholesterol level is 190 mg/dL or higher. You are 40–75 years old with diabetes and an LDL cholesterol level of 70 mg/dL or higher.

How do you treat high LDL-P?

Interventions that lower LDL-P more than LDL-C include fibrates, niacin, pioglitazone, omega-3 fatty acids, exercise, Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets. Although statins lower LDL-P, they may leave a significant number of patients above the LDL-P target.

Do statins reduce LDL-P?

Our study suggests that statin therapy—whether or not recipients have coronary artery disease—does not decrease the proportion of small, dense LDL among total LDL particles, but in fact increases it, while predictably reducing total LDL cholesterol, absolute amounts of small, dense LDL, and absolute amounts of large.

Which is worse high cholesterol or triglycerides?

In fact, high triglycerides are as dangerous as bad cholesterol when it comes to your risk for heart disease. According to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high triglycerides could be a problem for one-third of all Americans.

What does it mean when non-HDL cholesterol is high?

What does it mean if your non-HDL cholesterol is high? If your non-HDL cholesterol is high, you may be at a higher risk of developing atherosclerosis, or narrowing of the arteries. Non-HDL cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease and: chest pain (angina)

Is there a non statin cholesterol medication?

There are many non-statin medications your doctor might prescribe: Bile acid-binding resins, like cholestyramine (Locholest, Prevalite, Questran), colesevelam (WelChol), and colestipol (Colestid) stick to cholesterol-rich bile acids in your intestines and lower your LDL levels.

What does LDL-C vs LDL-P?

The number of LDL particles (LDL-P), each with Apo B lipoprotein, and not simply the amount of cholesterol in LDL particles (LDL-C), plays a central role in atherosclerosis. LDL particles move into the arterial intima by a gradient-driven process.

Is LDL the same as LDL-C?

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is conventionally quantified in terms of the mass of cholesterol carried by these particles. LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) has been the standard measure of LDL and LDL-attributable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk for so long that “LDL” and “LDL-C” tend to be used interchangeably.

Is LDL the same as LDL C?

Should you take a statin if your calcium score is zero?

“As we have been advocating for almost a decade, if you had a calcium score of zero, especially if you’re not at high risk, your baseline risk is at such a low threshold that committing to a statin for an indefinite period is unlikely to benefit,” said Nasir.

What is a good CAC score for statins?

According to the guideline, a CAC score of 1 to 99 favors statin therapy, especially in those ≥55 years of age. For any patient, if the CAC score is ≥100 Agatston units or ≥75th percentile, statin therapy is indicated unless otherwise deferred by the outcome of clinician-patient risk discussion.

What does a CAC score of zero mean?

The message of these findings is clear and bears emphasis here. When the pretest probability of coronary artery disease is low (eg, asymptomatic screening setting), a CAC score of zero is associated with low risk of coronary artery disease and low risk of near-term coronary events (see Table ).

How much do statins reduce risk of cardiovascular events?

For example, there was a 17\% reduction in relative risk with statins among those with a CAC score of 1 to 100 but a 68\% reduction in relative risk among statin-treated patients with a CAC score of 101 to 400. There was a 44\% reduction in cardiovascular events among statin-treated patients with a CAC score above 400.
