Is an ROTC cadet a veteran?
To be considered a veteran, the student must have been released from active duty. Students who are currently attending a US military academy and ROTC students are not considered veterans.
Are AFROTC cadets in the military?
While the purpose of Air Force ROTC is to commission officers for the U.S. Air Force, cadets are not in the military until after graduation. With AFROTC, we provide students with lots of opportunities to see what the Air Force is about before they make any kind of commitment.
Are contracted cadets active duty?
Contracted students are those who have entered a contract and committed to complete the Basic and Advanced Courses of ROTC. Contracted students then enter the Army as an officer upon graduation, either on Active or Reserve duty.
Are contracted cadets in the Air Force?

Can you join Afrotc as a sophomore?
Any student with at least six semesters remaining in their degree program can join Air Force ROTC. So, if you’re a second-semester freshman, or a sophomore remaining in your undergraduate studies, you can join.
What happens after Afrotc?
After completing all Air Force ROTC and academic degree requirements, cadets accept a commission as second lieutenants in the Air Force, appointed by the President of the United States. The length of your initial service commitment depends on your career. Most officers have a four-year active-duty service commitment.
Can cadets be deployed?
No, it is Army policy that Cadets cannot be deployed while enrolled in ROTC. Only after commissioning as an officer after college graduation and then completing nearly a year of advanced training will someone become eligible to deploy.

Normally AS400 cadets. Extended Cadet Leader (ECL): Cadets who have completed the AFROTC curriculum but need additional time to complete their academic degree, such as 5-year engineering program students. Normally AS700 cadets or, if on scholarship, AS800 cadets.

Contracted Army ROTC cadets sign an enlistment contract and take an oath of enlistment just like everybody else that has enlisted in the military. They are “enlisted” in the USAR specifically under cadet commands ROTC Control Group. Hence why we carry reserve component Mil ID’s.
Does joining AFROTC mean you are in the military?
