What were the causes of the Quebec separatist movement?

Before I go into great detail regarding the issue of the causes of the Quebec Separatist movement let us first look at the history and demographics instead. Beginning in the 1960s Quebec was the center of terrorist movement attempting to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada and establish a French-speaking nation.

What is separatism in Canadian politics?

In modern times, separatism has frequently been identified with a desire for freedom from perceived colonial oppression. In Canada, it is a term commonly associated with various movements or parties in Québec since the 1960s, most notably the Parti Québécois and the Bloc Québécois.

Why do French-speakers in Quebec want independence from Canada?

Outside Quebec, many French-speakers feel marginalized, ignored and under pressure to assimilate into English Canadian culture. Within Quebec, many see independence from Canada as the culmination of more than 200 years of resistance to the British conquest of French Canada between 1759 and 1763.

Why do the Quebecois want to secede from the Canadian Federation?

The Quebecois feel that if they give in to the larger culture too much that they will lose their French-Canadian identity, and end up with nothing. Those that want to secede from the Canadian federation believe that if they don’t secede soon that there might not be any French-Canadian culture around a hundred years from now.

Is the separatism movement dead in Canada?

Since then the Separatism movement has been searching for strong leadership (including the dramatic rise and fall of Andre Boisclair) and Quebecers have started shifting their views towards voting for the Conservative Party and back to federalism, but the movement is hardly dead. It is just leaderless for the time being.

An independent Québec would have broken English Canada into two small, very different clusters of provinces separated by a French nation; each much less able to withstand absorption by the U.S., perhaps piecemeal, province by province.

Is separatism and socialism a part of Canadian culture?

Separatism and socialism is part of our culture as a Canadian population, but this mentality is very destructive and should be banished. Until this gets rectify, this country will continue to be divided and Quebec will continue to suffer as a result. You can agree or disagree, this is my opinion
