Why is the Chinese flag the way it is?

The modern flag of China is associated with its communist past. The red represents China’s communist revolution whereas the five stars are interpreted as a unification of the country’s people under the communist party. The larger star surrounded by the four smaller stars symbolizes the communist party.

Where does the hammer and sickle come from?

The hammer and sickle (Unicode: “☭”) is a symbol meant to represent proletarian solidarity – a union between the peasantry (pre-industrial term) and the working class. It was first adopted during the Russian Revolution, the hammer representing workers and the sickle representing the farmers.

Zeng was surprised to see his design chosen, especially because of the omission of the hammer and sickle. As a reward for his successful design, he was awarded RMB 5 million, or roughly USD$750,000. Today, the flag is still in use across mainland China, and respect of the flag is written into the national penal code.
