Can CBT be done over the phone?

Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective for many psychiatric disorders, face-to-face access with a therapist is not possible for many patients. However, a new study indicates that conducting CBT over the phone may be as effective as doing it in person.

They found that participants predominantly rated their experience as effective, and identified advantages to traditional therapy such as location convenience and accessibility. They found that online interventions produced an equivalent overall effect when compared to face-to-face therapy.

What’s wrong with CBT?

CBT promotes assumptions which may be faulty. It also usually labels any “negative” thoughts as pathological or dysfunctional. Again, this is not true. Another faulty assumption is that changing one’s thinking patterns can improve one’s mood or decrease the symptoms of a mental disorder.

Can CBT make you happy?

The early publicity around CBT made it seem a miracle cure, so maybe it functioned like one for a while. These days, by contrast, the chances are you know someone who’s tried CBT and didn’t miraculously become perfectly happy for ever.
