When can you start taking IB classes?

While the DP and CP programs technically don’t begin until a student’s junior year, IB students start taking prep courses as soon as they enter high school. Because of this, the application process typically begins in 8th grade, about a year before a student starts their freshman year.

How long do IB courses take?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme primarily aimed at 16-to-19-year-olds in 140 countries around the world. The programme provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognized by many universities worldwide.

Can you take IB classes as a freshman?

This is a two-year program for eligible juniors and seniors. Typically, high schools allow only students with a certain grade point average who have taken specific preparatory classes as freshmen and sophomores to take part in the program. Some students, however, may qualify for fee reductions or waivers from either the College Board or their school district.

Yes, students can enter the IBDP without having taken the Pre-IB program offered in Grade 10. However, it is recommended that students take the Pre-IB program in Grade 10 to support the development of the skills they will need to enhance their success in the IBDP.

How do IB classes work?

Students can choose to take individual IB courses, similar to AP, or pursue an IB Diploma recognized by colleges around the world. Students take a standard set of courses and exams in the rigorous two-year IB Diploma program, which they complete during their junior and senior years.

Do IB classes boost GPA?

Do IB courses receive weighted grades? Yes, all IB courses receive weighted credit at MVHS and at the university level. Universities will only award up to 8 semesters of weighted credit from AP and IB classes towards their GPA calculations.
