Which music file format has the best quality?

A lossless audio file format is the best format for sound quality. These include FLAC, WAV, or AIFF. These types of files are considered “hi-res” because they are better or equal to CD-quality.

Is MPEG or AAC better?

When compared to MP3, we can definitely say that AAC is superior in terms of sound quality at a given file size. When it comes to market penetration, MPEG is still the preferred format; especially in portable media players as all of these devices do support playback of MPEG compliant files like MP3 and MP4.

What quality is AAC?

I mentioned above that a CD contains audio at 1,411 kbps, and when you convert that audio to a lossy file, its bit rate is much lower. A higher bit rate is better, so a 256 kbps MP3 or AAC file is better than a 128 kbps file.

CD quality audio is the most widely accepted standard for high-quality audio. WAV and AIFF files offer excellent sound quality. While 320kbps MP3s provide good quality audio it will always be outdone by CD quality audio.
