What is the difference between AMC and AIME?
The AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) is an intermediate examination between the AMC 10 or AMC 12 and the USAMO. All students who took the AMC 10 and had a score of 120 or more out of a possible 150, or were in the top 2.5\% also qualify for the AIME.
How difficult is the AIME?
The AIME and USAMO This is a 3-hour exam with 15 short-answer problems; the median score is maybe about 5 problems. Correctly solving maybe 10 of the problems qualifies for the much more difficult USAMO. This national olympiad is much more daunting, with six proof-based problems given over nine hours.
What is the difference between AMC and mathcounts?
The AMC 8 is intended for students at the middle school level; the AMC 10, which is for high school underclassmen, can also be suited for some middle school students. MATHCOUNTS exams, however, are harder to find as AoPS does not aggregate them.
What is the difference between the AMC 10 and AMC 12A?
In 2016, the AMC 10A and AMC 12A have 14 questions in common, while the AMC 10B and AMC 12B have 12 questions in common. The questions on the AIME are much more difficult and students are very unlikely to obtain the correct answer by guessing. As with the AMC 10 and AMC 12 (and the USAMO), all problems on the AIME can be solved by pre-calculus methods. The use of calculators is not allowed.
What percentage of AMC 10 students are invited to the AIME?
For students taking the 2012 AMC 10 contests, we will invite students in the top 2.5\% of all scorers or scorers with at least 120 points (whichever is more inclusive) to the AIME. This differs from the values of 1\% (or 120 points) which have been in effect since 2004.
