If you are using UPS for working computer, and you are not operating the device in the night, then yes, you may unplug the UPS. On the contrary ,if any emergency load is connected, including use of a fan or light, then unplugging will defeat the purpose of application. It is not required.

No, you do not have to. UPS will have to charge it’s internal battery and these should happen at the back end. Turning it off may result in the battery not being fully charged and not ready for the next use. Most modern UPS have a very wide range of safety circuits built into them.

What happens if you turn off a UPS?

Yes, it will shorten the life expectancy of its batteries. Every night, with the UPS unplugged, the batteries self-discharge. Every day, when you plug the UPS back in, the batteries have to charge back up to compensate for the self-discharge. This daily partial discharge, full charge cycle will reduce the battery life.

Yes. It is necessary to constantly charge the UPS because most power interruptions that place a demand on the battery are so quick you might not even notice them. If your house power browns down (goes below 110VAC, but does not fail, your ups will discharge the battery to compensate.

Should a ups be plugged in all the time?

UPSes are designed to be plugged in continuously, and to have a computer plugged into them continuously. That’s the only way they will be ready to carry the computer through a power interruption. I don’t see much point in extending the life of a UPS by having it not connected ready to do its job.

Why is there no voltage coming out of my ups?

There is no voltage coming out of the UPS. It is shutdown, but things like the display are operating. Here, the UPS is waiting to be transferred to the OFF State, or another, higher state (see below). In this state, if input power is lost it will simply transfer to the off state.

Now, if you keep your computer completely shut down when you aren’t using it, you could also turn off the output switch of the UPS. This would keep the battery charged, and prevent the UPS from activating if there is a power failure when the computer doesn’t actually need input power.
