Why are there no plastic electrical boxes?
Though PVC can melt when overheated, it does not conduct electricity like metal does. There are non-metallic (NM) cables leading in or out of the box. Metal-sheathed wiring relies on bonding with the metal electric box for grounding and should not be used in plastic boxes.
Are plastic electrical boxes legal in Canada?
Plastic boxes are allowed. I finished by basement in December 2019 and the Licensed Electrical Contractor that ran the electrical used metal boxes in 99\% of the wiring but then used a blue plastic box for the GFCI receptacle on the wet bar counter.

Are there plastic junction boxes?

Are outlet boxes grounded?
The National Electrical Code requires that all receptacles installed in all 15- and 20-amp, 120-volt circuits be grounded. Replacing an ungrounded outlet with a ground fault current interrupting (GFCI) receptacle protects you from shocks, but it won’t protect your electronic equipment from power surges.
Can you use PVC conduit with metal boxes?
Metal or plastic boxes can be used with nonmetallic conduit. Always run a ground wire when using PVC conduit.
Are junction boxes safe?
Junction boxes are designed to protect your wiring connections from damage. Making electrical connections outside of a junction box will damage the wiring and increase the risk of heat and sparks.
Why are junction boxes used?
What are Junction Boxes and What Are They Used For? A junction box is an enclosure that protects a connection (the junction) of two or more wires carrying electrical current. This level of protection is needed to prevent fires and to maintain solid, reliable connections that stay tight over many years.
Does a plastic outlet box need to be grounded?
Because they are plastic, there is no need to attach a ground wire to it. Since it is made of a non-conductive material, switches and outlets cannot short out if they touch the side of the box. Plastic boxes usually come with tapped screw holes for easy attachment of switches and outlets.
Do I need to ground a plastic junction box?
How do you ground an outlet in a plastic box?
Plastic boxes cannot be grounded in the same way. But it’s still necessary to bring the equipment-grounding conductor into the enclosure to ground devices such as switches and receptacles. Connect the bare or green wire directly to the green screw on the device.

Can you use plastic electrical boxes with Romex cables?
It is recommended but not required that you use a plastic electrical box when you have Romex (or NM) cables leading in or out of the box. Electrical code does not require that you use NM cable with plastic boxes. The overriding concern is that the application should be grounded.
