Why are radio songs sped up?
Two reasons: Slightly faster songs might sound more appealing to listeners. If listeners hear the same songs on two competing radio stations, the station that speeds up playback may be perceived as having more energy. (The same argument drives the so-called loudness wars between stations.
Why does music sometimes seem faster?
Thus when we listen to any song, the brain intercepts the sound and the harmonic frequencies and absorbs the sound spectrum in the widest way. Hence we get a ‘fuller’ and ‘faster’ impression of music !

Electronic synthesized music, the waves are often fairly simple sins and sawtooth etc. They can be artificially fattened with detuning, but they can still sound cold. Whereas, slowing them creates all kinds of artefacts of the slowing algorithm that add extra harmonics and make them sound warmer and more complex.

In general, a radio-ready song is one that is three minutes, give or take 30 seconds. It doesn’t have a long intro, and it should get to the main hook within the first 30 seconds. Typically, even if it has an instrumental break, it’s a shorter one, because three and a half minutes doesn’t offer a lot of breathing room.

AM radio use to play songs faster and leave some solos out so they would have more time for commercials. Then when the band plays those songs in concert, they played them slower like they were made to be played. I don’t think that FM stations do this nearly as much.
