How a Baby’s XX Gender or XY Gender is Determined. Females have an XX pair of sex chromosomes, and males, an XY pair. A baby’s gender is determined by the sperm cell that fertilizes a woman’s egg. Sperm carries one sex chromosome, either a Y (male) or X (female). To better understand, let’s look at how sperm develop.

Is XX just XY?

Many people of course are arguing there are only just two genders (i.e. sexes) male and female. But in doing research, there seem to be more combinations at least at the DNA level. Instead of just XX and XY, there can be XXX, XXY, and X and many others besides.

What does 46xx mean?

46,XX testicular disorder of sex development is a condition in which individuals with two X chromosomes in each cell, the pattern normally found in females, have a male appearance. People with this disorder have male external genitalia .

Can a person have XY chromosomes?

The X and Y chromosomes are called “sex chromosomes” because they contribute to how a person’s sex develops. Most males have XY chromosomes and most women have XX chromosomes. But there are girls and women who have XY chromosomes. This can happen, for example, when a girl has androgen insensitivity syndrome.

What is the gender of XXY chromosome?

Normal karyotypes for females contain two X chromosomes and are denoted 46,XX; males have both an X and a Y chromosome denoted 46,XY. What gender is an XXY chromosome? Usually, a female baby has 2 X chromosomes (XX) and a male has 1 X and 1 Y (XY). But in Klinefelter syndrome, a boy is born with an extra copy of the X chromosome (XXY).
