What is an ASA certified sailor?

ASA is a nationally recognized sailing certification and accreditation program. There are tests for various levels of sailing from Basic Keelboat to Offshore Passage making. The Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering standards meet the requirements of many chartering situations.

What can you do with ASA 101 certification?

An ASA 101 certified sailor will be able to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 27 feet in length by day in light to moderate winds (up to 15 knots) and sea conditions. The sailor will be able to demonstrate competence in these maneuvers: Depart dock or mooring fully ready to get underway safely.

Do ASA certifications expire?

In summation, official ASA certifications do not expire but you must stay up to date with your skill level. Every situation is different but in most cases where certification is held without somewhat recent experience, a simple 4 hour “refresher” is all it takes to re-qualify at a certain level.

How long is the ASA 101 course?

ASA 101 takes anywhere from 2 to 4 days, depending on the school, the instructor, and your schedule. Each school has a different approach and they each will utilize the ASA curriculum to teach the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat course.
