What is an ASG gearbox?
The ASG is an automated manual transmission that combines excellent fuel economy with driving ease. Because the ASG is a single-clutch gearbox (just like a manual gearbox), torque to the driving wheels must be interrupted during a gear change.
What is meant by DSG transmission?
‘ DSG stands for ‘Direct-Shift Gearbox’ (luckily enough, the German translation has the same initials – Direkt-Schalt Getriebe). Without getting too technical, this special gearbox is effectively two separate clutches that work together as one unit, without a clutch pedal and with full automatic or semi-manual control.
Whats the difference between auto and DSG?
A) The DSG (or Direct-Shift Gearbox) is a semi-automatic gearbox made by Volkswagen. Unlike a conventional automatic ‘box, which uses a ‘torque converter’ instead of a traditional clutch, the DSG has two clutches. As you select one gear, the next is automatically pre-selected, which enables much faster changes.
Is a DSG gearbox reliable?
Are DSG gearboxes reliable? In most cases, both a six-speed and seven-speed DSG gearbox will be as reliable as any other gearbox. Some owners have reported that older gearboxes have been prone to the occasional failure, but the newer boxes seem to have overcome these.
What is ASG automatic?
ASG gearboxes are simply an automated version of a traditional manual box but utilising an electric motor driven auto clutch and weighing in at 30kg, just 3kg more than the manual. The driver has an automatic gear lever as normal with D, N and R positions. It lacks however a traditional ‘P’ (Park) position.
How long does DSG clutch last?
If you’re after an automatic gearbox, don’t let relatively uncommon faults put you off – a DSG is usually one of the smoother and more efficient types of gearbox, and most survive for at least 100,000 miles if not more.
How long will a VW up last?
Volkswagen cars typically last around 100,000 miles as long as it is serviced and taken good care of. VW cars you buy today usually last longer than VWs that are just 10 years old. However, like most vehicles, you can only achieve this mile mark if you continuously take the car for regular maintenance.
How does a DSG automatic transmission work?
A DSG automatic transmission has several entries to measure which gear to engage. Well, you can also take the situation under control but still, the clutch will be electronically actuated. That said, the throttle position, brake position and speed are the main factors with which it determines when to shift the gears.
What does DSG mean on a Volkswagen?
DSG is the Volkswagen marketing acronym for their family of dual-clutch transmissions or DCT. DSG stands for “Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe,” or direct-shift gearbox. The VW DSG transmission is similar to all other common DCT designs in that it is effectively two separate electronically controlled manual transmissions built into one.
How much does a DSG gearbox cost?
While some cars can only be ordered with a DSG gearbox, this type of transmission is generally offered as a cost option. This cost obviously varies between different car companies but, as an example, Volkswagen charges around £1,400 extra for a DSG gearbox on a Volkswagen Golf hatchback.
What is the difference between a torque converter and DSG?
While a torque converter offers smooth gear changes it uses a thick hydraulic fluid which is less efficient than a clutch-based system. The advantage of the DSG over a conventional automatic is that the gearbox that’s not currently in use is able to work out which gear you’re likely to want next and will prepare it for use.
