Can ATS read colored text?

Applicant Tracking Systems instantly recognize black text but may struggle with fancy colors, graphics, and icons. Since you need to get past those systems to be considered by an actual human, it’s important to comply with the machine’s expectations.

Does font matter for ATS?

Unique Font Through our testing, we’ve found Times New Roman and Arial to be the most reliable for getting past ATS. Font size doesn’t matter quite as much, but we suggest sticking to 10 or 12 point font to make your resume look professional when it lands in the hands of the hiring manager.

What is the white text trick?

A common trick is to include a keyword several times in a row, but change the text color to white so it is hidden. However, when keywords are highlighted on the hiring manager’s end, the white text will stick out like a sore thumb (see screenshot below).

Word or PDF format are most easily read by most ATS. Since many ATS cannot read tables or graphics, and have difficulty with italicized or special characters such and ampersands and accent marks, it’s best to avoid using them.
