What are the advantages of Ackerman steering?

Advantages. The intention of Ackermann geometry is to avoid the need for tires to slip sideways when following the path around a curve. The geometrical solution to this is for all wheels to have their axles arranged as radii of circles with a common centre point.

Ackermann effect is a phenomenon associated with an automobile’s steering system. A steering design that incorporates Ackermann causes the inside (closest to the radius of the turn) wheel to turn a greater amount than the outside wheel.

Ackermann: In Ackermann geometry, the inner tire in a corner turns more than the outer tire with the same input steering angle. Anti-Ackermann: In Anti Ackermann geometry, the inner tire does not turn as much as the outer tire with the same input steering angle.

Anti-Ackerman reduces the steering angle and hence, the slip angle of the inner wheel as compared to the outer wheel, thus giving it more grip for high vertical loads. With Ackerman steering config, there is a higher steering angle (=higher slip angle) on the inner wheel with low vertical load.

Why do some cars have anti-Ackerman wheels?

This is going to be a short answer and to the point. The weight transfer during cornering causes it to understeer, thus anti Ackerman is to compensate for the understeer. The outer wheel has more traction and pulls the car towards the inside of the turn. It is sometimes better for high speed track cars. Usually not for off road cars.

Or more to the point the peak lateral load happens at a lower slip angle, hence the desire to run less steering angle on the inside compared to the outside tyre (anti ackermann) the pic with the lines depicting ackerman, the right tire seems especially not-lined-up. i’d say it’s a bit anti-ackerman.

Why do Ackerman tyres have such a low slip angle?

As with Ackerman in general, they can get away with gobs at low speed, tight corners since steering inputs will be much less during high speed work. The inside tyre is generally always carrying less vertical load. Generally speaking the less vertical load a tyre has, the lower the amount of slip angle it can sustain.
