How sharp should a splitting AXE be?
A splitting axe must not be dull but should be sharp. It is not necessary for it to be hair-splitting sharp, but will taking the axe edge to this sharpness level be a problem? It will not be a problem taking a splitting axe to this level of sharpness as long as the convex nature of the bevel is maintained.
How do I know if my axe is sharp enough?
The truth is that you can often realise by yourself when your axe head is not sharp enough. However, if you are unsure, just tell yourself that your axe blade, when sharp, should be able to cut paper with almost no effort. To test this, grip the axe head between your knees, and press a piece of paper against the edge.
Does an axe need to be sharpened?
Splitting axes or mauls don’t have to be as sharp because they’re meant to split logs and rounds of wood with blunt force, not cut into them. But the rest – hatchets, felling axes, limbing axes, tomahawks and more – have to be sharp to work as well as you want them to.
Do you need a sharp axe to cut wood?
If you want to chop wood properly, you should have, at the very least, a good, heavy axe (though you can get by with a good hatchet in some cases). To be more accurate, you should have a maul, the type of axe with one sharp edge set into a thick, heavy head.
Should a splitting wedge be sharp?
Wedges have a flat back which is struck with a maul or is inserted into a log splitter. The front of the wedge narrows to a sharp point which drives into the wood and makes the split. A sharp wedge is necessary for efficient splitting as well as safety.
What angle do you sharpen a hatchet?
Ideally, the angle should be a about 25 degrees (and slightly convex). Continue to file equally on both sides of the blade until the sharpening gauge pattern fits perfectly. Next, it’s time for your whetstone to do its job: honing the edge. Store your axe in a dry place, out of direct sunlight.

Can you sharpen an axe with a grinder?
Grind the surface of the axe blade with the rotating disc of the angle grinder. Hold the grinder to the axe at an angle between 5 and 15 degrees. Sharpen the axe blade with slow, long and continuous straight strokes over its metal surface, making sure not to overheat the edge of the blade in the process.
Whats the difference between a splitting AXE and a chopping axe?
These splitting axes offer one-strike splits with each swing, so logs can be split with less time, effort and hand strain. Chopping wood consists of cutting horizontal logs into segments with several sharp, downward strokes of an axe. These axe blades are able to bite three times deeper when chopping.
Is a maul better than an axe?
For very large chunks of wood, the splitting maul is a great choice, as its heavier weight will give you additional power. However, smaller users may find the heavier weight of the maul difficult to swing. For smaller pieces of wood, or splitting around the wood’s edges, a splitting axe is the better choice.
What is the best angle to sharpen an axe?
The sharpening angle for an axe is approximately 30 degrees per side. It works best if you make rotating movements with the sharpening stone, like you are cleaning it. Try to keep the movement as small as possible, to make sure you sharpen the entire edge.
How can I tell if my axe is sharpened?
A safer and equally effective test is to carefully put your fingernail (not your finger) against the sharpened edge. The edge should bite into your fingernail and not slide down it. In the coming weeks I will be posting some of my techniques for sharpening axes, so keep checking back!
