Why did they change the names of the hyenas in Lion King?

Banzai is Swahili for “skulk” or “lurk”. Ed’s name Azizi literally means “he doesn’t know” probably describing how he’s constantly zoned out. Banzai’s name is weird because Kamari means gambling which doesn’t make sense for his angry and brash personality.

What does the name Pumbaa mean?

In Swahili, pumbaa (v.) means “to be foolish, silly, weakminded, careless, negligent”. Timon is one of the few characters whose name has no meaning in Swahili; Timon is a historical Greek name, taken to mean “he who respects”.
