Are Azerbaijani and Turkish mutually intelligible?

Azerbaijani and Turkish are two closely-related languages from Oguz branch of Turkic languages, which are said to be mutually intelligible.

Do Turks and Azerbaijanis understand each other?

Azerbaijani, or Azeri, is part of the Oghuz branch of Turkic languages along with Turkish and Turkmen. Statistics suggest Azeri and Turkish speakers can understand each other more than 80\% of the time. Azeri has influences from both Russia and Arabic too.

Are all Turkic languages mutually intelligible?

Turkish is mutually intelligible, barring these vocabulary differences, with the Turkic languages spoken in adjacent areas, such as Azerbaijani, Uzbek, and Turkmen. A speaker of Turkish can be understood as far east as Kyrgyzstan. Modern standard Turkish is based on the Istanbul dialect of Anatolian (Comrie 1990).

Are Turkmen and Azerbaijani mutually intelligible?

Turkmen is a member of the East Oghuz branch of the Turkic family of languages; its closest relatives being Turkish and Azerbaijani, with which it shares a relatively high degree of mutual intelligibility. Written Turkmen today is based on the Teke (Tekke) dialect.

How similar is Azerbaijani Turkic to Istanbul Turkish?

Only Turkmen is considered East Oghuz branch of Turkic language family. But question can be rephrased as “How similar is Azerbaijani Turkic to Istanbul Turkish” – because there are some areas of Turkey like Erzurum or Kars, their Turkish language is practically no different that Azerbaijani, just called differently for political reasons.

I would say Azerbaijani and Turkish is mutually intelligible. Both languages are the part of same language family – Turkic language family, and both languages are in Oghuz branch (specifically West Oghuz branch). Only Turkmen is considered East Oghuz branch of Turkic language family.

Why is the Azerbaijani language called Turkish?

Officially there language is called Turkish, because they didn’t have soviet rule that resulted identity change. South Azerbaijani also have dialect continuum from west (Urmia dialect) to east (Khorasan dialect), first one sounds mostly turkish, second one sounds like turkmen language.

What is the difference between Baku and Istanbul dialects?

Baku and Istanbul dialects are the most different ones – if person speaks native Bakuvian dialect (not official Azerbaijani) I highly doubt Turkish people would understand even the subject, because dialect has many features that comes from Tat language (not Turkic language).
