What causes audio hum?
Though some noise is inherent in the audio signal (tape hiss, amp gain, etc.), speaker hum and hiss generally come from poor wiring, ground loops or other electromagnetic interferences (AC line hum; RF interference, and USB and PC noise). To rid of the noise, we must rid of the interference.
Why is my turntable making noise?
— check that all the tonearm wires (see below) are connected to your cartridge properly. Over time, they may work loose, and an open channel can cause a humming noise similar to the ground hum. The sensitive stylus in your cartridge can pick up vibrations from other equipment, which can cause buzzing or humming sounds.
What causes turntable rumble?
The major cause of rumble in turntables is the platter main bearing spindle moving relative to the rotational centre, often as a response to gyroscopic precession induced by the reaction force of the drive (idler or belt) on the spinning platter.
How do hum eliminators work?
Simply insert the Hum Eliminator between the offending pieces of equipment to break the ground loop and get rid of the hum. They isolate the shield of the cable from the equipment ground which helps to reduce or eliminate hum from the AC power used to run the system or other equipment in the building.
Do all turntables hum?
Most turntables are pretty resistant to mains interference but as it is so simple to check, you might as well do so. Next up is the way that the turntable grounds. If you have a hum that comes and goes depending on whether you are touching any part of the player at the time, this is a prime candidate.

- Get a Grounding Adaptor.
- Use an Audio Ground Loop Isolator.
- Get a Hum Eliminator or an Isolation Transformer.
- Use a DI Box.
How do I lower my turntable rumble?
One way to reduce rumble is to make the turntable very heavy, so that it acts as mechanical damper or low-pass filter, but even with the best turntables a lot of rumble tends to be generated by warped records or pressing irregularities sometimes visible as ‘bobbles’ in the surface.
