What language should I learn if I want to join the FBI?

We consider nine languages critical to our investigations—Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. But FBI linguists may also be called upon to provide foreign language and cultural expertise in many more languages.

Aspiring special agents can study a variety of majors. Some study criminal justice, corrections, military intelligence, or homeland security and gain experience working as police officers. Others approach the career from a business background, with a degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or economics.

The FBI has offices all over the world, so the agency needs proficiency in every major language. “We routinely deal with over 100 languages. Of those, Spanish is always in demand,” says Gulotta. “The FBI is probably one of the largest consumers of Spanish in the government.”

Language skills and cultural knowledge, specifically in Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Farsi, Russian, Somali, Uzbek, Korean or another language are highly sought after by the FBI. All applicants must pass the FBI’s Foreign Language Test Battery.

To qualify for a position as an FBI Special Agent: Candidates must be at least 23 years old, but younger than 37 at the time of appointment. Veterans, however, may be granted an age waiver if they are older than 37. Candidates must be a United States citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Language Specialist opportunities are available in many major U.S. metropolitan areas with the FBI and the National Virtual Translation Center (NVTC). Hiring opportunities are available to current FBI Independent Contract Linguists, current FBI employees and external applicants who meet job requirements.
