How do you calculate the elastic modulus of concrete?

The test for determining the modulus of elasticity of the concrete is known as a compression test on the cylindrical concrete sample. The test typically consists of an arrangement of the compressometer and applying a series of compressive stress cycles up to about 40\% of the measured compressive stress.

What is the value of E for concrete?

Tensile strength – σ : 2 – 5 MPa (300 – 700 psi) Modulus of elasticity – E : 14 – 41 GPa (2 – 6 x 106 psi)

What is elastic modulus of concrete and steel?

The modulus of elasticity is material dependent. For example, the modulus of elasticity of steel is about 200 GPa (29,000,000 psi), and the modulus of elasticity of concrete is around 30 GPa (4,350,000 psi).

What is static modulus of elasticity of concrete?

A stress-strain curve is drawn with the help of values of stress and strain obtained. The modulus of elasticity so obtained from actual loading is called static modulus of elasticity. It has been observed that even under short term loading concrete does not behave as an elastic material.

What is modulus of elasticity of concrete in compression?

Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete can be defined as the slope of the line drawn from stress of zero to a compressive stress of 0.45f’c.

Is concrete elastic?

Concrete is a brittle and a composite material consisting of various phases. However, it has elastic behavior under low stresses. Theoretically, this is equal to a value of 30-40 \% of its compressive strength [1]. Therefore, concrete is considered as an elastic material in engineering calculations [2,3].

Why is elastic moduli important for concrete?

The higher the value of the modulus, the stiffer the material is. Thus, comparing a high performance concrete to a normal strength concrete, it is seen that the elastic modulus for high performance concrete will be higher, thereby making it a stiffer type of concrete.

What is static elastic modulus?

The elastic modulus is defined as the slope of the straight-line part of the stress–strain curve for the given test (Fig. 1b); Secant Young’s modulus Esec—at a fixed percentage of ultimate stress. In this paper, the secant static modulus has been calculated following ASTM D 3148-69 (1996).

Why is elastic modulus important for concrete?

The higher the elastic modulus means the concrete can withstand higher stress but the concrete will become brittle and sooner cracks will appear. Low elastic modulus indicates that it will bend and deform very easily.

What is elastic modulus of a material?

The Young’s Modulus (or Elastic Modulus) is in essence the stiffness of a material. In other words, it is how easily it is bended or stretched. when graphed, the resulting plot will look something similar to this: The Young’s modulus is the slope of the initial section of the curve (i.e. m in y = mx + b).

How do you calculate the modulus of elasticity of concrete?

Modulus of elasticity for concrete, Ec =w1.50 c ×0.043√f ′ c M P a E c = w c 1.50 × 0.043 f c ′ M P a This formula is valid for values of w c between 1440 and 2560 kg/m 3.

What is short-term and long-term modulus of elasticity?

Short term elastic strain (Due to Instantaneous load) Long term elastic strain (Due to effect of creep and shrinkage) Due to this situation, Short term elasticity due to short-term elastic strain is called short-term modulus of elasticity. And long term elasticity due to long-term elastic strain is called effective modulus of elasticity.

What is the elastic modulus of concrete in ACI 318-19?

ACI 318-19 specifies two equations that may be used to determine the elastic modulus of concrete. When using Equation 19.2.2.1.a, the density of concrete should be in the range of 1440 kg/cu.m to 2560 kg/cu.m ( 90 lb/cu.ft to 160 lb/cu.ft).

What is ECEC and f’c of concrete?

Ec = Modulus of elasticity of concrete. f’c = Compressive strength of concrete.
