Is it bad if a bat touches you?

Although some people say to catch the bat that touched you to see if it had rabies – this is quite dangerous. Trying to catch a bat could actually cause you to get bitten in the first place – they are very difficult to handle safely (and killing a bat can get you a huge fine in many countries).

Can bats attack humans?

They do not attack people. People get into trouble with bats when they attempt to pick them up. Any wild animal is going to act defensively when someone attempts to pick it up. Other warnings about bats include the advice that a bat seen flying in the daytime is unusual and constitutes a risk to human safety.

Why should you not touch bats?

Because bats may carry the rabies virus, it is important to avoid any physical contact with a bat. Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system in humans and other mammals. A person may contract rabies from an infected animal bite, scratch, or saliva exposure.

What should I do if I touch a bat?

If you are bitten by a bat — or if infectious material (such as saliva or brain material if it is killed) from a bat gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound — wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and get medical advice immediately.

Can bats in your house make you sick?

Other than damaging your attic and making a lot of noise, bats can make you get sick. Their droppings, guano, contain a fungus known as Histoplasma capsulatum which is detrimental to people’s health. You shouldn’t even attempt to clean bat guano on your own! These pests also expose humans to rabies.

You should avoid handling bats because several species, such as the hoary and big brown bats, have large teeth that can puncture skin if they are handled improperly. Less than one percent of the bat population contracts rabies, which is a much lower rate of incidence than other mammals.

Unlike rodents or other wildlife, bats themselves are not known to cause major structural damage to your home but their accumulated droppings can. Guano can stain your ceiling or walls, damage your insulation. Depending on your home’s layout, it could even contaminate your water.

A bat that is unable to fly and is easily approached could very well be sick. Rabies is a fatal disease. Each year, tens of thousands of people are successfully protected from developing rabies through vaccination after being bitten by an animal like a bat that may have rabies.
