Can HIV be transmitted through cat scratches?

It is highly unlikely that you could get HIV through your HIV positive friend cat scratching them and then scratching you. There are no documented cases of transmission happening in this way.

Can HIV be transmitted through a scratch on the skin?

HIV cannot survive long outside the body, so it does not transmit via surfaces. The risks of contracting the virus through other methods of exposure, such as biting, scratching, and thrown bodily fluids, are either very small or nonexistent.

Can you get HIV from touching a contaminated surface?

In fact, except for sharing needles and syringes, there’s never been a documented case of a person contracting HIV from casual contact with infected fluid on a surface in the environment.

Can cats pass FIV to humans?

As FIV can’t be transmitted to humans or other non-feline animals, an FIV positive cat is able to share his or her environment with a dog or other pet, as long as there are no other cats.

How do cats catch FIV?

The primary mode of transmission for FIV is through bite wounds from an infected cat. Casual, non-aggressive contact, such as sharing water bowls or mutual grooming, does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading the virus.

Can you catch anything if someone scratches you?

If the integrity of the skin is not broken from the scratch, and there is no access to the bloodstream, then there would not be a risk of infection. If someone scratches you, but you are not exposed to their blood, semen, etc., you would not be at risk of infection, even if the scratch broke the skin.

Is FIV transmitted through saliva?

FIV is transmitted via saliva between cats that fight and bite their competition. Mothers can pass it onto their kittens. It cannot be transmitted when holding, petting, or cuddling a FIV-positive cat, and the virus cannot live on surfaces or clothing.

What happens if a human scratches you?

Most human bites will heal without causing an infection or lasting harm to the tissue. Some bites will need surgery to clean the wound and repair the damage. Even minor bites may need to be closed with sutures (stitches). Deep or extensive bites may result in significant scarring.

If your cat goes outside, they are at risk. Myth #5: FIV positive cats should stay indoors only. True! The majority of cats that we diagnose with FIV are cats that have spent time outdoors and gotten infected from another outdoor cat.
