How do you determine if a slab is one way or two way?

If L/b the ratio is greater than or equal 2 or then it is considered a one-way slab. If L/b the ratio is less than 2 then it is considered a two-way slab. In one-way slab, the load is carried in one direction perpendicular to the supporting beam. In two-way slab, the load is carried in both directions.

When should one way slab be designed?

When a rectangular slab is supported on all four sides, but the ratio of the longer side, L, to the shorter side, S, is 2 or more, L/S ≥ 2.0, then, the slab will act as a one-way slab, with bending primarily occurring in the short direction.

When a RCC slab is designed as a one way slab?

What Is One Way Slab? When a slab is supported on all four sides and the ratio of long span to short span is equal or greater than two, it will be considered as one way slab. The load on the slab is carried by the short span in one direction. However main reinforcement bar and distribution bar in transverse direction.

What are the IS code guidelines regarding effective span of a one way slab?

1) The ratio of longer span to the shorter span of the slab is greater than 2 (two). 2) Bending moment takes place in one direction only, ie in a shorter span. 2) Bending moment take place in both direction ie along the shorter span and longer span. 3) Main steel bars is provided along shorter direction.

Which is better one way slab or two-way slab?

The one-way slab is economical up to a span of 3.6 meters. Whereas the two-way slab is economical for the panel sizes up to 6m × 6m. In one-way slab quantity of steel is less. In two-way slab quantity of steel is more as compared to the one-way slab.

What are the general requirement of flat slab *?

The appropriacy of thickness has to be determined for shear and bending moments. The flat slab should have a minimum thickness of 125 mm.
