Can you use ATF as oil?
Automatic Transmission Fluid Might Just Work You might wonder if you can use Dextron-III/Ford Mercon multipurpose automatic transmission (ATF) instead of motor oil. The answer is a qualified, “Yes.”
Will gear oil hurt a transmission?
Most transmissions, especially automatic transmissions do not use gear oil. They use a different lubricating fluid. Using gear oil in such a transmission would damage the transmission.
What is the difference between ATF and gear oil?
Gear oil is also thicker than ATF because it serves mainly to lubricate the gearbox, transfer cases, and differentials. ATF does not have the thick lubrication qualities needed in a manual gearbox, and gear oil does not contain all the additives needed to smoothly run an automatic transmission.
Is ATF same as gear oil?
Can you mix gear oil with engine oil?
Absolutely! You can put engine oil in the engine and gear oil in the gearbox. But do not mix them or use one in place of the other. Unless of course, your gearbox uses the same oil as the engine, then no problem.
What happens if you add ATF to motor oil?
If that is a quick oil change place, you have a much higher probability of having your engine (and transmission, and brake hydraulic system, and differential, and power steering) damaged by them than by your act of adding some ATF to the motor oil. On a regular basis, people report on this site…
What happens if you accidentally put transmission fluid in the oil?
Most likely no damage. No problem at all– a lot of people will add transmission fluid to the oil from time to time to clean out the engine. If you had added a lot, it probably would have been a good idea to change the oil sooner rather than later, but if it’s only half a cup (by which you mean 4oz, right?) it shouldn’t be a problem at all.
What’s so good about ATF?
ATF has some amazing detergents in it and it cleans engines oil systems so amazingly well it’s stupid.
Can I use ATF in 5W30 oil?
Dont use ATF In large quantities as it’s more of a hydrolic fluid instead of a lubricating oil, dont use it in vehicle that require 0w (pick your number) oil but a little bit is ok in 5w20, 5w30, 10w30 and 40 and so on.
