Can you have PTSD from basic training?

Most mental health professionals aren’t ready to say that boot camp causes PTSD, but some do. Research shows some psychologists and mental health professionals feel it is possible for recruits to have the “PTSD seed” before they enter the military.

So can a soldier get PTSD without actually seeing combat? “Yes, you can,” says Craig Bryan, the executive director of the National Center for Veterans Studies.

Is basic training traumatizing?

Not if it is done properly. Many troops leave with a form of PTSD, if they were abused. The problem is that basic combat training is such a subjective event that nobody ever experiences the exact same thing. For example, few people have had the exact same drill instructors.

Abstract: Military basic training is a stressful situation that may influence the personality development of military recruits. Extraversion, openness, and agreeableness were not affected by basic training. These findings support the view of training personnel that basic training fosters positive changes.

Non-combat PTSD is a manifestation of stressors that creates anxiety, panic, and distress. Some root causes are related to physical or sexual assault while serving, witnessing a fellow soldier’s death or suicide, or motor vehicle accidents. The non-combat PTSD stressor differs for each veteran.

Rates of PTSD were higher in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps than in the Coast Guard and Air Force (Figure 1). They were also higher for enlisted service members and warrant officers than for junior, mid-grade, and senior officers, as well as for women than for men.
