Do you need a bank account for basic training?

You should already have a bank account set up before you leave for basic training, and bring your account information and an ATM/debit card with you. If you don’t have an account set up, one of the first things the staff will do is require you to establish an account at the base credit union or base bank.

At some basic training facilities, new recruits are given a debit card to use to access your basic training allowences. For most jobs, you can access a pay stub to see how much you earned for a pay period. Basic training pay rates are pretty straightforward. Members of the military are entitled to “base pay”.

You won’t have a need for cash while at boot camp, but for safe practices and maybe to buy a snack while you travel, they recommend bringing twenty dollars. You are allowed to bring a wallet to put your money in and use it to hold your ID and social security card while you’re at it.

Required toiletries include a toothbrush with a case, hairbrush or comb, one washcloth and towel, antiperspirant, shower shoes (flip-flops), toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, soap and a soap case, a disposable razor or safety razor with blades, and shaving cream (optional for women).
