Does throttling a valve increase pressure?

When the flow of a pump is regulated using a throttling valve, the system curve is changed. The operating point moves to the left on the Pump curve when the flow is decreased. The head difference between the two curves’ operating points shown is the head (pressure) drop across the throttling valve.

How does throttling affect pressure?

The pressure drop in a throttling device is caused by the increase in velocity. The velocity is increased due to the decrease in area of the device that the fluid is flowing into and then out of (e.g. throttling valve, porous plug, capillary tube).

If the discharge of a centrifugal pump is throttled, then its suction lift will increase (by considering liquid level in suction pond/sump is same as before). When i say suction lift, i am directly pointing out the Static Suction Pressure of the pump. Because of throttling operation, flowrate of centrifugal pump will decrease.

What is the difference between passive and throttle valves?

Passive valves, or throttling valves, have a fixed position and do not change their loss coefficient in response to other system changes. These are manually set and do not react to pump and system changes.
