Do muscles get smaller during recovery?

Soon after (a few hours) your workout, the muscle activity obviously is gone and your muscle fibers settle back to their normal state, hence the smaller muscle size. Totally normal. Your muscles seem to increase in size because they are pumped up with blood.

Why do my muscles feel smaller after working out?

Muscle growth is facilitated by an anabolic or building-up process called hypertrophy. If your muscles are getting smaller, they are atrophying. Atrophy is a catabolic process that occurs if your training, diet or lifestyle is not sufficiently aligned with your goal of making your muscles bigger.

Blood flow. After training your muscles feel right and have a pump to them, it’s because you are pushing as much blood into the muscle as possible, same reason it should look more vascular the day you train. It can’t stay in the muscle so they look flatter in the days after.

Weightlifters are short because it means the bar isn’t required to travel as far. Lifting in excess of three-times body weight is easiest done over a shorter distance.

Can you really lengthen your muscles?

It is indeed possible to lengthen or shorten muscles. Resistance training (particularly exercises that sufficiently stretch activated muscles and eccentric contractions) and explosive training will cause muscles to increase in length.

Are rest days important for building muscle?

Training large muscle groups may eat up more central recovery resources, therefore warranting a lower volume or training frequency. However, I don’t see which central resources would be a factor here.
