What are the 4 types of turbulence?

There are four causes of turbulence.

  • Mechanical Turbulence. Friction between the air and the ground, especially irregular terrain and man-made obstacles, causes eddies and therefore turbulence in the lower levels.
  • Thermal (Convective) Turbulence.
  • Frontal Turbulence.
  • Wind Shear.

What causes airplane turbulence?

Frontal turbulence occurs when warm air meets cold air. The warm air will lift over the cold air, creating friction between the two air masses and producing turbulence. The turbulence can become extreme when the warm air is also moist and unstable or when thunderstorms develop.

The normal horizontal wind flow is disrupted causing swirls and irregular air movements. Frontal turbulence is caused by the abrupt wind shift between warm and cold air masses. Fast-moving cold fronts are the most severe in this type of turbulence.

This turbulence can be caused by small-scale (i.e., hundreds of metres and less) wind velocity gradients around the jet stream, where rapidly moving air is close to much slower air. It is most severe over mountainous areas and also occurs in the vicinity of thunderstorms.
