Why do we need internal BGP?

The purpose of IBGP is to provide a means by which EBGP route advertisements can be forwarded throughout the network. In theory, to accomplish this task you could redistribute all of your EBGP routes into an interior gateway protocol (IGP), such as OSPF or IS-IS.

Is BGP A interior routing protocol?

Interior BGP (IBGP) is an exterior routing protocol designed to exchange routing information between routing domains (i.e., autonomous systems). However, BGP may be used for routing within a domain. In this application, it is referred to as Interior BGP.

IGP selects the shortest path between the two nodes based on distance. The distance here is a sum of metrics of all the links that belong to a given path.

Why we use BGP instead of IGP?

The gist of it is that IGPs are built to operate within an autonomous system and BGP is built to operate between autonomous systems. The key difference is in the nature of intra-AS vs. The goal is to get a holistic view of the autonomous system and the need for routing policy, while there, isn’t great.

A route learnt from an eBGP peer will be advertised back to another IBGP or eBGP neighbor by default. A route learnt from an IBGP peer will not be advertised back to another iBGP neighbor by default.
