Is 600-800 a good rating for a beginner chess player?

Here’s some tough love: 600-800 rating is pretty much the lowest possible rating without intentionally trying to lose. You should not be playing blitz. You should learn basic opening theory, basic tactics, and basic endgame theory. Get an account on FICS (it’s free) and follow some of the free lectures on there, you will get a lot out of them.

Without studying tactics or theory or openings or anything, if you just stop and think for a second, you’ll be able to shoot up 4 or 5 hundred points. Probably more.

What is a good rating to start on ChessCube?

And in reference to your other comment; with a starting rating of 1500 on Chesscube rather than 1200 like on chess.com, it’s not surprising you don’t see people lower than 1000. 1500-1000 = 500. 1200 – 700 = 500. I’ve played on Chesscube and even I was beating people 1200-1400, where I lose against people around 900 on chess.com.
