Why diesel engines have less BHP?

The time for complete mixture of the fuel and air in the diesel engines is less then petrol one(because of high pressure). So it is necessary to lower the fuel/air ratio and allocate more combustion volume for these engines. So diesel engine gives less power than petrol engine.

Why do trucks have low horsepower?

Conversely, most trucks, buses, and tractors have very high torque, and lower horsepower. They need to be able to do a lot of work, but they don’t need to do it very fast. This is also why people talk about “low-end torque” being important for better power at slower speeds.

Why do so many large trucks have diesel engines?

The reason they use diesel in large vehicles, rather than petrol, is because diesel engines have generated more torque than gasoline-powered engines. That allows the engines to produce more power from same volume and makes them less sensitive to thin air in high mountains.
