Does iBeacon require an app?

They need to be connected to a mobile app which means either building your own iOS/Android app or using one of the available third-party platforms. As a result, end users need to have an app installed to be able to interact with beacons.

A consumer carrying a smartphone walks into a store. Apps installed on a consumer’s smartphone listen for iBeacons. When an app hears an iBeacon, it communicates the relevant data (UUID, Major, Minor, Tx) to its server, which then triggers an action. iBeacon provides a digital extension into the physical world.

What is the function of Apple’s iBeacon?

iBeacon is Apple’s location-tracking service that was introduced at the 2013 Developer conference. With functionality built into iOS7, iBeacon uses Bluetooth Low Energy (LE or BLE) to allow the pinpointing of devices within an environment – a store, hospital, hotel, amusement park.
