What comes out of a steam train chimney?

The chimney (smokestack or stack in American and Canadian English) is the part of a steam locomotive through which smoke leaves the boiler. Steam locomotive exhaust systems typically vent cylinder exhaust through the chimney to enhance draught through the boiler.

What is the boiler filled with on a locomotive?

When the firebox is fired, the heat from the fire travels through tubes inside the boiler and heats the water around them. The gap at the top then fills with steam from the boiling water, and the steam collects in the Steam Dome on top of the boiler.

What is the utility of providing a dome in locomotive boiler?

The steam dome is a vessel fitted to the top of the boiler of a steam locomotive. It contains the opening to the main steam pipe and its purpose is to allow this opening to be kept well above the water level in the boiler.

How does a steam locomotive firebox work?

In the standard steam locomotive fire-tube boiler, the firebox is surrounded by water space on five sides. An ashpan, mounted underneath the firebox and below the grates, catches and collects hot embers, ashes, and other solid combustion waste as it falls through the grates.

What is burning inside the locomotive?

An oil burner engine is a steam engine that uses oil as its fuel. The term is usually applied to a locomotive or ship engine that burns oil to heat water, to produce the steam which drives the pistons, or turbines, from which the power is derived.

Is locomotive boiler externally fired?

Locomotive boiler is a water tube boiler. Water tube boilers are internally fired. La-mont boiler is a low pressure water tube boiler.

Why fire grate is inclined in locomotive boiler?

It is a brick arch placed inclined over the grate. It prevents the entry of the ash, dust and burnt fuel particles into the fire tubes. It provides a way to the hot flue gases to travel a definite path before entering into the fire tubes of the boiler.

What makes the sound of a steam train?

Steam is generated and guided to a cylinder. The steam flows in and creates so much pressure, that the rods connected to the driving wheels of the locomotive start to push back and forth, which moves the steam train. This is how the locomotive makes its rhythmic sounds.

What is the chugging sound of a train?

A. Each ”chug” is the noise made by escaping steam as the engine’s valve gear releases steam at the end of one stroke of one cylinder. For example, in a two-cylinder steam locomotive, the connecting rods turn the driving wheels at one revolution per complete cylinder cycle.

What is a firebox on a steam locomotive?

In a steam engine, the firebox is the area where the fuel is burned, producing heat to boil the water in the boiler. Most are somewhat box-shaped, hence the name. Steam Locomotive Fire Tube Firebox. Diagramatic section through an earlier steam locomotive boiler and firebox to the right.

How does a steam locomotive fire tube boiler work?

In the standard steam locomotive firetube type boiler, the firebox is surrounded by water space on five sides. The bottom of the firebox is open to atmospheric pressure, but covered by fire grates (solid fuel) or a firing pan (liquid fuel).

What is the bottom of a firebox made of?

The bottom of the firebox is open to atmospheric pressure, but covered by fire grates (solid fuel) or a firing pan (liquid fuel). If the engine burns solid fuel, like wood or coal, there is a grate covering most of the bottom of the firebox to hold the fire.

Does a steam locomotive boiler have a superheater?

Note the boiler is not fitted with a superheater. In the standard steam locomotive firetube type boiler, the firebox is surrounded by water space on five sides. The bottom of the firebox is open to atmospheric pressure, but covered by fire grates (solid fuel) or a firing pan (liquid fuel).
