Most often attributed to inventor James Russell, the CD evolved from multiple optical mediums, and was eventually finalized in 1980 when Sony and Philips created the famed “Red Book” standard, which was a series of documents that outlined a 120mm diameter disc bearing music at a resolution of 16 bit/44.1kHz.

Who invented the Blu-ray Disc?

Short answer: Sony was the primary creator of the fundamentals of Blu-ray Disc technology and released the first players and recorders, but Sony initially worked with Philips and Pioneer on various aspects of the prototype systems, and was dependent on technologies from others, such as the blue laser from Nichia.

What happened to Blu-ray?

Blu-ray was a mess of royalties and needed a high-performance CPU to run its Java based framework. Sony developed their specification so everyone would pay them royalties. Every player, every disc (including blanks) was sending royalty money back to Sony. It was a dick move.

Why don’t Blu-ray discs have cartridges anymore?

Because of this feature, the Blu-ray discs of those times were susceptible to scratches and contamination and hence had to be protected by cartridges. TDK came up with a hard coating polymer for Blu-ray discs, thus eliminating the need of cartridges. Soon, Panasonic and Sony also developed hard-coating technologies.

What is Blu-ray technology?

Blu-ray technology involves the use of a blue laser to read and write data to a disc. The wavelength of a blue laser is substantially lesser that of the red laser used by the DVD format.
