Why does drill bit get hot?

Drilling into any material causes friction between the cutting edge and that which is being drilled , this friction causes the metal to heat up . Whilst drilling steel, oil or oil water mix is generally used A : as a lubricant but also B : to prevent the bit getting too hot .
