Are airlines subject to the ADA?

The ADA doesn’t regulate air travel discrimination. However, the Air Carrier Access Act does. Under the Air Carrier Access Act, domestic and foreign passenger airlines are prohibited to discriminate against people with mental or physical disabilities. The Act only covers passenger airlines that are open to the public.

Is there a size limit for airline passengers?

There is no set weight limit for passengers on commercial flights in the U.S., but some airlines, most notably Southwest, require customers who cannot fit in one seat to book a second.

Does American airlines have handicap seating?

The American Airlines seating policy requires that “if a customer’s body extends more than 1 inch beyond the outermost edge of the armrest and a seat belt extension is needed, another seat is required.” You are not given the option to purchase that additional seat online, and you must call the airline.

Can you buy a whole row of seats on an airplane?

You buy a “contract of carriage” which says the airline will take you from your origin city to your destination city. Each contract (affectionately known as a “ticket”) needs to be assigned to a person. So you can’t buy an entire row of seats without assigning actual passengers to those seats.

Can airlines split up families?
