Are apes a subset of monkeys?
That is, monkeys and apes are separate groups, a monkey is not an ape and an ape is not a monkey. As to common (informal, non-technical usage), monkey includes most primates: chimps and baboons and the canonical tree swinging monkey, possibly gorillas but not humans at all.
Humans and monkeys are both primates. But humans are not descended from monkeys or any other primate living today. We do share a common ape ancestor with chimpanzees. All apes and monkeys share a more distant relative, which lived about 25 million years ago.
These three species look alike in many ways, both in body and behavior. But for a clear understanding of how closely they are related, scientists compare their DNA, an essential molecule that’s the instruction manual for building each species. Humans and chimps share a surprising 98.8 percent of their DNA.
Did apes come from monkeys?
Along with the other apes (which include chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans), we evolved from ancient apes. Like modern-day apes and monkeys, we evolved from ancient monkeys. The earliest primates, dating back to over 65 million years ago, resemble lemurs more than they resemble chimpanzees.
How are apes and monkeys related?
Humans are primates–a diverse group that includes some 200 species. Monkeys, lemurs and apes are our cousins, and we all have evolved from a common ancestor over the last 60 million years. Because primates are related, they are genetically similar.
What is our common ancestor with chimps?
The chimpanzee–human last common ancestor (CHLCA) is the last common ancestor shared by the extant Homo (human) and Pan (chimpanzee and bonobo) genera of Hominini….Taxonomy.

Do humans and monkeys have a common ancestor?
What animal has the closest DNA to humans?
Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees now have to share the distinction of being our closest living relative in the animal kingdom. An international team of researchers has sequenced the genome of the bonobo for the first time, confirming that it shares the same percentage of its DNA with us as chimps do.
