Posted on May 30, 2021 by Author

Are axes effective against plate armor?

Axes can be used to hook and trap weapons and limbs, can block with the width of the steel head horizontally above the edge, and, especially if backed with a spike or hammer, can be used to smash plate armor. Besides the sword, the spear, or some version of it, was the weapon of the medieval battlefield.

Is axe more damage than sword?

Axes can be also used as a melee weapon. They deal more damage than swords, and a wooden axe has the same damage as a diamond sword. However, there are three drawbacks as a weapon: Attacking with an axe will cause it to take double durability damage.

What was the most effective weapon against plate armor?

In the late Middle Ages, when plate armour became increasingly common, people started using weapons with better armour-piercing capabilities, like maces, warhammers and various polearms. Swords are great against lightly armoured and unarmoured targets, like peasants, archers and civilians.

Can an AXE penetrate Armour?

It’s almost impossible to penetrate armor with a blade, be it an axe or a sword. They spread the force over too much area. The more you concentrate the force the better it will penetrate.

Is a handaxe better than a sword?

Using a handaxe of comparable weight to a sword will have less reach than that sword and no ability to thrust. It will also be less wieldy than a sword, as axes are balanced much farther forward than a sword. However, an axe can hook in ways swords can’t. That said, all things considered I think an axe alone is inferior to a sword alone.

What are the advantages of an axe?

The advantage of an axe is definitely in it’s additional utility, and it’s cheapness. However, I’d argue it is worse in most situations for actual combat. It can hook shields, but then you cannot use it as an offensive weapon (And the shield bearer could potentially disarm you).

Can you hook shields with an axe?

Axes can also hook shields. You can hook shields with a sword, but you can only do that with the crossguard so it is much less practical. The sword is less versatile but faster while the axe is more versatile, and while it is slower it hits like a truck so I am calling this dead even.

Why is a dull Axe more effective than a dull sword?

A dull axe is far more effective than a dull sword because you can still bludgeon someone with it. Assuming we’re talking one-handed weapons, sword has the edge for fencing and can – allegedly – split a shield and strike down an unarmoured foe in a single strike.
