Are surgeons on call all the time?

After training, the average general surgeon works 50-60 hours per week (not including time available for call). Depending on the practice situation chosen, you can be on call as much as all the time (if in private solo practice) to once a week (if in a large group practice).

Do doctors really work 24 hour shifts?

Doctors don’t typically work for 24 hours straight. Hospital shifts are generally 12 hours (7 am to 7 pm, for example) and some medical students/residents may put in 16-hour shifts. And yes, sleep deprivation would make anyone more prone to errors.

Do they do surgery in the middle of the night?

Half of all surgeries were performed in the morning (152 cases, 53.15\%); 73 surgeries (25.5\%) were performed in the evening and 61 (21.3\%) were performed late at night. Surgeries performed during late-night shifts were marginally better.

Do all doctors go on call?

You’ll work long hours, including nights and weekends, being on call out-of-hours on a rota basis. In some cases, less than full-time training for doctors is possible.

Can doctors sleep while on call?

A call room is a place for the physician to rest or sleep between responsibilities. However, that rest or sleep can be interrupted at any time by a beep of the pager. It is not the same for all facilities. When physicians are on-call, that means they are in the facility to be called for when needed.
