Where does the park surname come from in Korea?

Why is Park pronounced Park Geunhye and not 박?

They chose “Park” because it was a close approximation to the Korean pronunciation while also seeming “normal” to English speakers, thus avoiding discrimination and pronunciation issues. Now you may notice English news sources write 박 as “Park” even for Korean nationals (e.g. “Park Geunhye”).

Is it Park or Kim in Korean?

As you can see, “Kim,” “Park,” and “Lee” are more palatable names to English-speakers from a linguistic and cultural standpoint. Most of the South Korean 박s romanize their surname as Park because “park” is one of common English words. However, some South Korean 박s romanize their surname as Pak, Bak or other spellings.
